What is the value of a miss-printed, full color new state quarter?

I recently obtained a state quarter 2001 South Carolina coloration was part of it. At first, I thought the color had been erased, but after further inspection, I found it to be a different case. It seems that the color is applied to the original pressing of the quarter partly offset clockwise about 1 cm. Most of the middle section of quarter is devoid of any color, but most top you can clearly see the metal letters spelling "South Carolina" in it's original form, with the letters stamped in red same slightly to the right to print. It is clear that this coin was printed incorrectly in the Mint, and got out of control, but I have curious about what value can have. Any leads appreciated.

Most collectors consider his fourth damaged colored coin (Damage done after he left the U.S. Mint) and the premium offered or small coin. The private company that colored the quarter that ends in a disrepair and was put into circulation. Sorry, a collector's point of view there is nothing special.

Metal Stamping Materials and Processes

Little is known about this process, what type of machinery it uses or how it benefits our lives. The truth is simple. The process of metal stamping and the products it produces are virtually unlimited. Today, this process helps your car operate, medical equipment function and supplements other key components of our daily life.

Metal stamping operations utilize leading precision stamping presses including Bruderer, Kyori, Ingyu, and Minster with sizes ranging from 5 tons – 220 tons. Materials used in the process include Beryllium Copper, Phosphorous Bronze, Stainless Steel & Copper and Cold Rolled Steel with thickness ranging from 0.002″ to 0.180″. As a result, manufacturers have the capability to provide services and products for a wide variety of industries.

The Metal Stamping Process is put to use for a number if industries, including:

* Automotive parts stamping
* Medical stamping
* Stamping for mobile devices
* Stamped and drawn shields for industrial and electronics industries
* Bandolier
* Bandolier wire
* Header pins
* Contact pins
* Terminals
* Sleeved terminals
* Reel to reel
* Precision miniature stamping
* High speed
* Micro
* Stainless steel
* Medical Stamping

In addition, several types of metals are used in the process, including:

* Aluminum
* Beryllium
* Brass
* Bronze
* Cold Rolled Steel
* Copper
* Mylar
* Phenolic
* Stainless Steel
* Teflon
* Titanium and more!

The process of bandoliering involves the use of a delivery member (a “band”, or “carrier”) that conveys components from one point to another. In the precision metal stamping arena, bandoliering has been used extensively for manufacturing components such as pins assembled into electronic connectors. Bandoliered components are formed by a special type of precision metal stamping die (referred to as a progressive bandolier die), which is operated in a mechanical press (typically 60 ton, or greater). Raw material in the form of wire (ferrous or nonferrous) is fed into the die to be formed (stamped) into the final desired component, and raw material in the form of strip is introduced into the die to be formed into the bandolier to carry the final component. This article expounds on the use of the bandoliering technique for manufacturing various types of precision metal components. Specifically, the following will be discussed: (1) the benefits of bandoliered components, (2) examples of various applications that can employ bandoliering, and (3) various manufacturing options that can be incorporated into this process.

First, the benefits of producing a precision metal component in a bandoliered configuration (mainly for high volume applications) are threefold: (a) reduced unit cost, (b) repeatable quality, and (c) in-line post-processing. Unit cost can be reduced due to the fact that the stamping operation is performed in a progressive precision metal stamping die, and also because of the fact that the bandoliering process allows for time-saving secondary operations (such as assembly), which reduce overall unit cost. Quality is inherently repeatable in a progressive stamping die. The most significant benefit of the bandoliering process is related to the fact that the stamped components all exit the die in an “ordered” configuration, ready for an assembly process (either manual or automated) or for other secondary operations while still on the band (carrier). Related to this benefit is the fact that this process also lends itself to other manufacturing operations that can be performed inside the die (discussed later).

Second, the types of applications for which bandoliering may be employed are numerous. The following are examples of various industries that could employ this process: Medical devices (e.g., surgical components), Orthopedic components (e.g., pins), Electronic connectors (e.g., connector pins), Military components, as well as many other industries/applications.

Lastly, a bandoliered process can provide for various manufacturing operations to be performed either inside the precision metal stamping die, or outside of the stamping die (while the components are still located on the bandolier). Some examples of in-die operations that can be performed include: coining, sharpening, machining, assembly, and welding. Examples of secondary operations performed outside of the die (while the precision formed components are still on the band) include: cleaning, coating, heat-treating, and automated assembly.

High volume applications for stamped metal components should be evaluated to see if a bandoliered application could be used, especially if the need is present for secondary operations such as assembly, or other operations as discussed above.

The parts manufactured during the metal stamping process vary from tiny parts in material as thin as .05mm to larger frames and heavy duty metal components. Precision presses vary in size from 5 tons to 220 tons, and with speeds up to 1,500 per minute. Stamping services also have skiving equipment to contour metal thickness and configuration as required.

Grading Your Coins

A “grade” is described as a shorthand designed by coin experts (numismatists) to reveal a coin’s appearance.  Simply put, if a certain coin collector tells another collector that he owns an uncirculated Charlotte 50 half eagle, both should already have a concept of the coins appearance without even seeing it, because of the claim of its grade.

Some disclose that designating a grade to rank or categorize a coin is more of an art rather than science, since often it is extremely subjective or biased; this applies particularly when working on “Mint State” coins where little differences, in terms of grade, make so much difference in the price.

Grading can be learned, studied and applied with a predictable and known outcome that eventually depends on judgment, not feelings.

Like any language, science, sport, or research, it is best to learn and understand coin grading one component at a time, through serious study and experience.

Today, most numismatists use the “Sheldon grading scale”. While there are those that complain of “too many grades”, most experienced coin graders recognize and appreciate the fact that there is a wide range in features between ranges.

Strike

This is the method of stamping or imprinting a drawing or a symbol onto a blank.  Depending on the coin’s design, it can either have weak or strong strike. An example of this would be the “Type II gold dollar” on which both sides (front and back) have the highest strike that is perfectly aligned, meaning, these designs require weak strikes.

Generally the strike is not a key factor in establishing the coin’s grade except when it is included in a series where the value is connected to strike.

Preservation of the coin’s surface

The number of coin marks as well as where they are placed is a significant element in establishing the grade. While there is no fixed formula on the number of coin marks that sets its grade, there are several regulated standards regarding the significance of the location or positioning of a scratch.

For instance, a coin having a deep scratch that it is not easily visible on its reverse (back) side will not be strictly penalized. However, if the same scratch was positioned on a noticeable or obvious central point on the front, such as the cheek on the Statue of Liberty, it would be penalized  much more.

Patina or luster

A coin can have a variation of textures on the surface, influenced by design, the metal that was used and the “mint of origin”.  Textures can include frosty, satiny, proof-like and semi-proof-like.

When examining the coin’s surface in terms of grade, two things should be looked at; the quantity, or what is left of the original skin (has to be intact), and the location and amount of marks.

Luster is important especially when determining whether a coin is either circulated or uncirculated.  A coin in Mint State technically; is free of abrasion and wear and must not have significant breaks in its luster.

Color

This is a very subjective element in determining coin grade. For instance, a “gold coin” showing dark green-gold pigmentation may be unattractive to one collector and attractive to another.

As gold is moderately an inert metal, it is not prone to much color variance as copper or silver. Although wide ranging colors may exist in gold coins.

Almost all of US gold coins had been dipped or cleaned, therefore not anymore displaying their original color. As coin collectors become knowledgeable, most of them are attracted and fascinated to coins having their natural color. In most coin series, it is nearly impossible to discover original coin pieces.

Eye attraction or appeal

Color, luster, strike and surface marks come together, comprises “eye appeal”.  Note that a coin having superior “eye appeal” can be strong in one aspect, such as possessing exceptional luster but not quite as strong in another aspect, such as not so good color.

A coin that is undesirable in one aspect yet good enough in all the other aspects can still be distinguished as “below average” in “eye appeal”.

Knowing how to grade a coin is very important so that one can have an idea of the value or price of the coin that he is buying or selling.  When new to coin collecting, be sure to ask the help of an experienced collector or dealer when buying or exchanging your coins.

Top 5 Best Selling Russian Vodkas

You may be familiar with Absolut and Smirnoff since they are the top-selling brands of vodka worldwide. But do you know the best selling vodkas in Russia? With a multi-billion dollar vodka industry, Russians have thousands of brands to choose from. The Top 5 best sellers are a mix of affordability and high quality.

#1 – Green Label

Also known as Green Mark, this traditional vodka is named after the green quality seal that early Soviet government agencies would stamp on bottles after rigorous purity tests. The recipe includes a special high quality wheat, naturally farmed yeasts, and water drawn from reserves that has been filtered, purified, and softened for thousands of years.

#2 – Putinka

Since the Russian vodka market is highly competitive, makers need a unique brand and tons of marketing to ensure success. That’s exactly what Vinexim, owner of this brand, locked on to with Putinka, an affectionate take on former president and current prime minister Vladimir Putin’s last name. Fans of the brand say it’s mild in flavor and very smooth. Many millions of advertising dollars have been spent by the company and one promotional campaign claims that it’s actually good for relaxing and overcoming fatigue.

#3 – Five Lakes

Known as the best vodka in Siberia, Five Lakes claims to be as mild as the pure water of the Omsk Oblast lakes with a unique composition containing actual Siberian water and the purest grain alcohol. There is also a special mineral complex as one of the ingredients which is said to neutralize the negative effects of the alcohol on the body. The name is based on the Omsk legend of when 5 large meteorite fragments crashed into the region thousands of years ago, making round holes which were filled with living water, thus creating five lakes.

#4 – Soyuz-Victan Natural Harmony Vodkas

When this classic Russian vodka company introduced uniquely flavored brands, drinkers became fast fans of the natural ingredients and organic taste. There are several flavors of Natural Harmony vodkas such as Honey with Pepper, Nettle Leaves, and Lime Blossom vodka. However, the most popular brand is Soyuz-Victan Birch Buds which is infused with birch buds and herbs, St. John’s wort, and caraway. These natural plants and herbs provide smoothness and a pleasant herbal aroma.

#5 – Parliament

Russian field grown rye is this vodka’s main ingredient, enriched with soft spring water from the 250 meter deep spring located at the production plant. The company, Urozhay, claims to use the most modern technologies for vodka production. Parliament is processed with natural salts and purified with milk. A special coagulation technique absorbs all the impurities and harmful substances, then the milk is removed in a multi-stage filtration process, leaving a pure vodka of high quality.

The list of most popular vodkas changes each year with so many new brands being introduced all the time. You may find them in your local liquor store, but more likely will have to purchase them online, or wait to share a bottle with your favorite Russian lady during your next trip to Russia or Ukraine.
