Sterling Silver sheet metal – best place to buy? Best tool to cut it with?
I want to make sterling silver charms and such, stamping them with names, words, etc. Already found a source for the letter stamps, but need a good source for purchasing the sterling silver sheet metal, preferably online. Also – I’ve heard of people cutting it with a small saw, then filing the edges. Is this the most effective way, or could I use something along the lines of tin snips? Thanks!
I recommend either Rio Grande or Hoover and Strong (www.riogrande.com or www.hooverandstrong.com). My preference is Rio, mostly because they’re really nice and didn’t misspell my name–their ordering system is also easier. Also, they sell tools (like a jeweler’s saw frame and blades). The saw frames aren’t too expensive, and blades were around $6 for a gross last I checked. You can use tin snips (aka aviator shears), but I find I get really nasty edges with them (I don’t know if it’s me or the tool).
Btw, remember that the price of silver varies from day to day, so be aware of that when you place your order. (It’s currently on the pricey side, around $11-$15/oz.)

Chinamportzone.com has a network with many factory owners representing a myriad of industries in China. While not every project is right for China, if it does make sense, we can help. We have a full engineering staff and can utilize the in-house engineering staff of its contract manufacturing facilities.
Current and past projects include (but not all) furniture, consumer electronics, hardware, display fixtures, castings, various metal working, plastics, mold making, lighting, construction products, and many others. These products have been either sourced from existing Chinese production or manufactured with our clients’ proprietary designs.
ChinaImportzone Survices are :
• Shelving (Commercial and Industrial)
• Display racks
• Bio-medical devices and components

For inventors, new products, and entrepreneurs, MCTC has a full engineering staff available to help your design and develop specific projects. Engineering costs in China are typically one-third to half the cost of engineering services in the United States.

Furthermore, most Chinese factories we work with also have their own engineering staff. We coordinate our two engineering teams to provide you with a product design, manufacturing drawings, tooling drawings, and samples.
While not all projects are suitable for Chinese manufacturing, we can even do a “feasibility study” and source factories capable of producing your project. We help you go “in steps” instead of grapple with an entire project at once.
