Help! Floor prep disaster!?
My husband and I are trying to install peel-and-stick tiles in our kitchen/laundry. The existing floor is sheet vinyl with some texture, installed over vinyl asbestos tile, so we can’t remove it. We used an embossing leveler (Henry Patch and Skimcoat) mixed with latex additive. That stuff is awful! It became thick in minutes, making a smooth application impossible. Once we got started, we couldn’t stop. Now we have bumps, lumps and ridges all over our floor. What do we do now? Can it be sanded down? Should we hire someone to add another thin layer of skimcoat? Can anybody recommend someone in the Houston area to fix our mess for not too much money? Suggestions, please!
You should be able to sand it, but it will take a long time to smooth it out. You can also use the same compound to fill in some areas. Work in smaller areas. Mix small amounts. When the leveling compound starts to set, use a wide blade scraper to remove the ridges. A 6 inch drywall taping knife works good.
